Frequently Asked Qeustions

Q: Where I can I find Hometown Pellets?

A: Check with your local Home Depot.   If they are not in stock at your local Home Depot, ask a manager in the store to request our pellets.  A request from a manager from stores in PA, OH, WV, MD, or NY is the best way to get a truckload of Hometown Pellets into your local Home Depot.  Stores outside of these states may need special permission from corporate HQ to get our pellets.

Q: Can I use your pellets in my pellet grill or smoker?

A: Yes, you can. Our pellets actually burn more efficiently than many BBQ or cooking pellets, and they are more affordable. Although we don’t market them as cooking pellets, they meet the commonly accepted standards for cooking: 100% virgin hardwood, all-natural, and food-grade additives. Many seasoned pellet grillers have used our pellets for years without issues.

While some people prefer “flavored” wood pellets (like hickory), these are often not fully made of that specific wood and are significantly more expensive. In most cases, especially with non-smoked dishes, you won’t notice much flavor difference between regular and flavored pellets. Our pellets are made from a blend of hardwoods such as Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, and Hickory, and they contain no added binders—just natural lignin oil.

Although our pellets are food-safe, they aren’t officially approved by any government entity for cooking purposes (no such approval actually exists at this time), so we don’t advertise them as such. However, many people do use them in grills without any issues.

Q: What types of wood are used in your pellets?

A: Our pellets are made from 100% hardwood, using a blend of woods commonly found in our region such as Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Hickory, and Locust. We source sawdust and wood chips from various sawmills, so the exact blend of species can vary at any given time.

Q: Can you recycle the 40 lb. plastic bags?

A: Probably, but not through standard residential recycling pickups. You’ll need to take them to a specific recycling drop-off location. Our bags are made from type 4 low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic, which is recyclable. Some recycling centers may not accept pellet bags due to the sawdust residue inside, but many home improvement and grocery stores do have bins for recycling plastic bags, including wood pellet packaging. You can use websites like plasticfilmrecycling.org to find locations near you.

Another good alternative is to reuse the bags in various ways.  Here are some ideas that others have come up with - 20 Ways to Re-purpose or Upcycle Empty Wood Pellet Bags

Q: Can I use your pellets for horse or animal bedding?

A: While some people use our pellets for absorbing animal waste, we don’t specifically test them for animal bedding. Our pellets may contain a small percentage of walnut sawdust, which some horses are allergic to, so you should consult your veterinarian before using them for horse bedding. For other animals, consult your vet as well. We do not guarantee the safety of our pellets for this use, and they are not intended for human or animal consumption.

Q: Can I use the ash from the pellets in my garden?

A: Yes, ash from hardwood pellets is safe for your garden. However, you should be mindful of how much you add, as it can lower the soil's pH. You may want to check out this article for more details: Are Fireplace Ashes Good for Vegetable Gardens?. Overall, adding ash can be beneficial for your soil and is a better option than disposing of it in the trash.

Q: Can I use your pellets on my mushroom farm?

A: While some mushroom farmers have used our pellets, we don’t have much expertise in mushroom farming. If you’re considering it, you might want to consult other farmers or experts. For more information about the types of wood used in our pellets, see the “What kinds of woods do you use in your pellets?” section above.
